Professor Chen Tingxiang from Sichuan University participated in our institute's postgraduate and doctoral students' symposium on academic writingPublish Date:2020-11-12

On the morning of November 11, 2020, our institute held the postgraduate and doctoral students' symposium on academic writing in Marxism Institute' s meeting room, on the third floor of Museum of Science and Technology located in Minglun campus of Henan University. Professor Chen Tingxiang, from Sichuan University, the professor and doctoral supervisor in College of History and Culture, as well as the dean of Information Centre in  the southwest of China, were invited to be present. The symposium hosted by the deputy dean, Peng Xuqin. Parts of teachers, doctoral students and postgraduates attended this meeting. And this symposium lasted for almost 4 hours.

For the beginning, professor Chen shared us with some his own experience on writing and studying and gave some instructive suggestions on how to select topics and how to promote research levels. He emphasized that topic selections are always acquired in enlightenment. Most of us tend to think over something in sequence, but as researchers, we need to have critical thinking, based on the predecessors' theories. As for the promotion of researching levels, we need to focus on three 'big' elements. That is 'big' space. We should treat the problems from perspectives of the whole China or the whole world, not only the problem itself. Besides, 'big' time, that means we should associate with the history, reality and future together. Lastly, 'big' theory. Enough theoretical elements and broaden theoretical viewpoints are necessary. The statement of professor Chen inspired the postgraduates and doctoral students a lot on their academic writing. After that, there was a heated discussion between the professor and the students on concrete issues of academic writing, everyone benefited a lot from it.
